Accurate GTIN and barcode management is essential for confectionery buyers using POS, warehouse, ERP and e-commerce systems. A barcode is not just a checkout tool; it connects purchasing, inventory, product data and sales reporting.
Record the consumer-unit GTIN
Each sellable consumer pack should have the correct EAN or GTIN in the product master. Similar flavours and pack sizes must not be treated as interchangeable.
Separate consumer and case codes
Outer cases may have their own barcode or logistics code. Buyers should capture both when they are used operationally so warehouse receiving does not confuse a case identifier with the consumer unit.
Update codes when products change
Pack size, formulation or major packaging changes can result in a new GTIN. Retailers should not assume an updated pack keeps the same identifier.
Validate scanning before launch
New products should be tested in the POS or warehouse system before they reach shelf. This prevents checkout errors and receiving delays.
Link the barcode to complete product data
The GTIN should connect to brand, product name, variant, net weight, units per case, category and image.
Use our B2B Confectionery Product Data Checklist.
Manage duplicate records
Duplicate SKUs can appear when teams create a new record because they cannot find the existing one. Search by GTIN before creating a new item.
Check marketplace requirements
Online platforms may validate GTINs against brand and product information. Inconsistent data can block listings or create catalog conflicts.
