Multi-store confectionery allocation determines how central inventory is distributed across locations. Sending equal quantities to every store is simple, but it can create stockouts in high-demand stores and excess inventory in slower locations.
Allocate by demand, not store count
Start with recent unit sales by SKU and store. A location selling twice as much chocolate should generally receive more stock than a slower store unless local constraints justify otherwise.
Create store clusters
Group stores by similar sales patterns, size or customer profile. City-centre, suburban, tourist and convenience-led locations may need different confectionery mixes.
Protect core availability
Core A-items should receive stronger allocation protection because a stockout has a larger sales impact. ABC analysis can help identify these lines.
See Confectionery ABC Analysis.
Use safety stock by store
Safety stock should reflect local volatility and replenishment frequency. A remote store receiving deliveries once a week may need more cover than a location replenished daily.
Allocate seasonal stock differently
Seasonal confectionery should consider local event demand, historical sell-through and store traffic. Equal seasonal allocations often create avoidable leftovers.
Enable inter-store transfers selectively
If one store is overstocked while another is selling out, a transfer can recover sales. But the transfer cost should be justified by the value of the inventory.
Measure post-allocation performance
- Weeks of supply by store
- Out-of-stock rate
- Sell-through by SKU
- Store transfer frequency
- Markdowns
- Inventory aging
Use exceptions instead of manual review
Flag stores with unusually high or low stock cover rather than reviewing every SKU-location combination manually.
Allocation should improve both service and cash flow
Better distribution of inventory can reduce total stock while improving availability. The goal is to place each case where it is most likely to sell.
